The Town of Cave Creek (Arizona) is located in northern Maricopa County and is bounded by Maricopa County to the north, Phoenix to the west and south, Carefree to the east and Scottsdale to the southeast. The Town encompasses approximately 31 square miles.The Town is well situated for access to regional transportation. Interstate Highway 17 (I-17) is located approximately 8 miles to the west, via the Carefree Highway. This north/south route connects Phoenix and Flagstaff. The recently completed 101 Loop is accessible 12 miles to the south, from Cave Creek Road. This road provides connections to the commercial and shopping areas in the East Valley.
Air transportation is available at Scottsdale Municipal Airport, Deer Valley Airport and Sky Harbor International Airport. Recreation opportunities are available at nearby Lake Pleasant, Bartlett Lake, as well as the Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area, Cave Creek Recreation Area, and Gateway Desert Awareness Park.
The Town of Cave Creek is named for Cave Creek, the small stream that originates in the hills to the northeast and flows southwesterly for 25 miles before reaching the vicinity of Paradise Valley. The stream derives its name from a high, overhanging bluff along its west bank that forms a wide open-mouthed cavern about two miles north of the presentday Town.
Cave Creek is the ideal location, in the northern most edge of the Northeast Valley, makes it perfect for outdoor enthusiasts. Both Bartlett Lake and the Verde River are within a stones throw away. This makes it easy to dip into the cool water for tubing, waterskiing, jet skiing, or water fun. Hiking and horseback riding are other popular outdoor activities. Trails are sprinkled all over the surrounding area for both hikers and horses to wander. Cave Creek is a great place to spend time outside.
Both residents and visitors to Cave Creek have found that this desert community offers spectacular views and a variety of native plants and wildlife. The Tonto National Forest borders the town to north and the east. Black Mountain towers over the town on the east, separating it from its sister town of Carefree. Cave Creek is special. There are tall stately saguaros and mountains that encircle the town. The community blends its old west history with its small town charm in such a way that many have decided not to leave and instead make Cave Creek their home.
Today Cave Creek is a vibrant community of just under 4,000 people where the true western experience still exists. Cave Creek is small enough to feature the hospitality of a small town, yet large enough to offer visitors with the complete Arizona experience. Several fine hotels, resorts, Bed & Breakfast inns, and villas are complemented by the town’s many outstanding restaurants and bars. A wide variety of outdoor recreational activities including golf, horseback riding, and desert mountain biking and hiking are available. Shoppers have a multitude of offerings to choose from including several upscale western clothing and furniture stores. A thriving arts community also exists which includes numerous fine art galleries and studios.
Many say that Cave Creek offers the epitome of the Arizona experience. Others put it more simply: Cave Creek is Arizona.
